Bountiful Baskets 10/17/2012

Next week, Bountiful Baskets is taking a break. We are going to miss our weekly fruit and veggies.

I usually go to the grocery store after I pick up my co-op food, but I have enough pantry staples and meat in the house to get us by for the rest of this week, so I’m going to avoid the grocery store until next weekend. I never thought I would be able to say that right before Thanksgiving. What a great feeling. (Of course it helps that my Mom and Dad are hosting on Thanksgiving and all we need to do is cook a few sides/desserts and show up smiling.)

We volunteered at Bountiful Baskets this morning, and ended up with a couple extra melons. I’m excluding them from my pictures and count, as I want to only show the food that comes in the regular baskets. We did get two baskets again, and all of the pictures here are of two baskets combined. The total was $31.50 for all of this food. Who says that you can’t eat well on a budget??

Fruits! We got a ton of fruit today. There are 2 pineapple, 2 melons, 8 green grapefruit, 12 bananas, 10 apples, and 14 oranges.  I think I’m going to try to make some orange creamsicles this week with all of our oranges.

Here are the veggies we got in our two baskets this week. There are 2 heads of Romaine Lettuce, 2 stalks of celery, 10 baking potatoes, 3 1lb bag of carrots. (1 basket had 1 and 1 basket had 2), and 11 tomatoes (each basket was only supposed to have 3 tomatoes, but our site had some extras that got passsed out to everyone).  I am making tomato sauce with most of the tomatoes, hopefully I’ll end up with a couple pints of tomato juice as well. Yummy.

Here is the picture of everything together. Doesn’t it all look delicious? I’m going to chop up the celery, peel the carrots, cook the tomatoes, freeze the pineapple, juice the oranges, and snack on the apples. I’ve also got to start doing some research for Thanksgiving recipes. I went through my Grandma’s recipe box and uploaded all of her recipes yesterday, so I’m hoping to find some good recipes for Thanksgiving using what we currently have in the house. I’d better get started or this is going to be a long day. 😛
